Water and Sanitation Division
  • To formulate proper policies, strategies and action plans for the overall development, expansion and promotion of the water and sanitation sector through out the Kingdom of Nepal, and monitor and supervise implementation of decisions.
  • To perform the role of a coordinator among governmental, non-governmental and private organizations as well as bodies involved in the water and sanitation sector.
  • To render advice to the Ministry on all the technical, financial, social and environmental aspects associated with the water and sanitation sector.
  • To act as the secretariat for any kind of coordination committee formed or to be formed at the national level, related with the water and sanitation sector.
  • To provide necessary information and consultancy to, and assist, the Foreign Aid and Quality Standards Division in order to have coordination and harmony among donor countries involved in the water and sanitation sector.
  • To provide necessary information and consultancy to, and assist, the Foreign Aid and Quality Standards Division in formulation, study, review and approval of water and sanitation projects to be launched with donor assistance.
  • To provide necessary information, data and consultancy to, and render assistance to the Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation Division to prepare annual budgets and programs for the water and sanitation sector, monitor and evaluate implementation aspect of the programs and appraise the progress.
  • To render opinion and advice on the matters submitted by the subordinate Departments, corporations and committees, in the course of implementation of the water and sanitation projects, to the Ministry for decision.
  • To render necessary opinion and advice to the Legal Consultancy Section for the drafting, implementation, monitoring and consolidation of the Acts and Regulations that are pertinent to the Ministry and its subordinate departments, corporations and committees related with the water and sanitation sector.
  • For proper development of the water and sanitation sector, to do, or cause to be done, pre-feasibility studies of various projects, and, based on the feasible projects, formulate a long-term plan, on the advice of and in consultation with the Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation Division, and make arrangements for implementation through implementing bodies.

  1. Drinking Water Section
    • To formulate short-term and long-term programs at the national level, implement them and have coordination at the central level among the programs, in order to meet people's demand for potable water through out the Kingdom of Nepal.
    • To prepare guidelines for classification of services of drinking water projects and determination of execution of various drinking water projects according to their level, nature and technology.
    • To collect information and data on the population benefited from the urban and rural drinking water projects operated from the governmental, non-governmental and private sector, outputs achieved, available service standards (qualitative and quantitative) and other managerial aspects, analyze such information and data and provide the results to the implementing agencies.
    • To analyze, or cause to be analyzed, favorable and adverse impacts on the environment from implementation of drinking water projects, and give directions to the implementing agencies to identify, and to do research and study on, proper technology to mitigate adverse impacts and employ such technology.
    • To provide assistance at the central level to execute drinking water projects operated from the non-governmental and private sector.
    • To render technical assistance to bilateral and multilateral agencies in formulation, monitoring and evaluation of drinking water programs.

  2. Sanitation Section
    • To formulate short-term and long-term programs at the national level, implement them and have coordination at the central level among the programs, in order to meet people's requirements related with sanitation through out the Kingdom of Nepal.
    • To collect information and data on the population benefited from the urban and rural rainwater and domestic sewerage (excluding the road surface sewerage) projects, outputs achieved, available service standards (qualitative and quantitative) and other managerial aspects, analyze such information and data and provide the results to the implementing agencies.
    • To analyze, or cause to be analyzed, favorable and adverse impacts on the environment from implementation of sewerage and sanitation projects, and give directions to the implementing agencies to identify, and to do research and study on, proper technology to mitigate adverse impacts and employ such technology.
    • To provide assistance at the central level to execute sanitation projects operated from the non-governmental and private sector.
    • To render technical assistance to bilateral and multilateral organizations in formulation, monitoring and evaluation of sanitation programs.
